Can’t wait to hear you again. Heard you at the Purple Cow (I think that’s what it is called) in West Virginia. Love you guys. My son’s a musician in LA and went to Berklee. I know you are from Boston. My other son lives in Bloomsburg and we’ll be there at Harry’s. I teach music nearby too and never thought you’d come our way..how Convenient!

Dear GGG,
I feel privileged as I am the proud owner of your new album "Sweet nothings" since friday, june 12! The fact that I live in Germany makes it even more special, so a big thank you to Lonesome Day Records, too. I listened to the record four times now and (as usual) it comes out better and better. "Last night I dreamed", the duet "1.000 times" and "This old house" (nice guitar work there!) are my favourites so far, but this will probably change. The artwork is nice, too, the booklet has got everything you want, lyrics, photos (thanks for the signatures!). I don't want to meet that dog on the flip side - what made him go beserk? I hope you will have a great time touring the west! Good luck for that and a great success for "Sweet nothings"!!! Take care, your german supporter Georg.

The last time I saw GG&G perform, it was August 19th, 2010 at Stage on Herr in Harrisburg. That night Ward was sporting a black eye, Chris kept busting guitar strings and the band just seemed out of sync. Flash forward to April 30th, 2011, when they performed at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem. This time Ward was sporting a fancy suit, Chris took his guitar playing to a new level, and the band played as if they all met through eharmony.com. Even the idle banter between songs was funny and sincere, not contrived or forced.

The band played a nice mix of older stuff, Hank Williams covers, and some refreshing new songs off their upcoming album, Sweet Nothings. Especially enjoyable was Last Night I Dreamed, in which Ward tugged at our heartstrings with his tale of lover’s lament, while Chris coaxed haunting steel guitar sounds from his Tele. It was a homecoming of sorts for Chris, as he hails from nearby Orefield. It appeared that all of that town was in attendance - good thing Orefield is not that big, because neither is Godfrey Daniels. And Chris didn’t let his family and friends down as he definitely had his “A”-game.

It appeared to me that Ward brought the other band members into the vocal realm more so than past performances. On Dear John, they all took turns singing the verses. From behind his drums, Michael Calabrese belted out Hey Good Looking, and later, he switched places with Ward to front the band and sing John Prine’s Illegal Smile. What also stood out for me was when Chris added his vocals to Ward‘s, creating some sweet harmonizing sounds.

We seemed to be transported in time and space, arriving in Nashville for their new song Snakeskin Belt, then moving deep into the Mississippi Delta for Black Mountain Successful Blues; it was a great journey.

This was the third time G,G&G played at Godfrey Daniels; after this stellar performance, if they come again, like Roy Schreider in Jaws, this cozy venue will be saying “I think we’re gonna need a bigger boat”.
