Great memories from this show:
Sarah Blacker started the evening and softly drew us into her world – her small stature, shy commentary between songs, and youthful innocence left me, at the very least, rooting for her, and at best, desiring to adopt her as if she were a wide-eyed, love-starved puppy.
G,G&G didn’t disappoint as they blew the plaster off the walls of this small venue. We heard their standby’s such as Suzie, as well as new stuff, such as Universe Began. This was the last show that I attended in which Colt Thompson was a member of the band – we’ll miss him. Won’t soon forget their version of Folsom – the storyline of the song was inadvertantly emphasized by the crude stage set-up as their amplifier, perched on a stool, rocked back and forth to the rumbling rhythm of the song – hypnotic, just like Ward’s voice. Just another example of why seeing bands live can be so rewarding. It was BYOB and the wine flowed freely – as a result, my memory is fuzzy, but I believe Sarah joined them at the end for Woody Guthrie’s California Stars – I hope to see them perform this again. Their music is 3-dimensional and has substance, making the stuff we hear on pop stations sound like the “Wonder Bread” of the music world – thank you public radio for shining a light on this great band.
